MAC, Delta now beginning third phase of Terminal 1 concourse renovations

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines are ahead of schedule on the largest-ever interior renovation of concourses and passenger gate areas at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s (MSP) Terminal 1. The third and final phase of the renovations — concourse flooring, walls, and ceilings as well as comprehensive gate improvements — begins next week, more than two months earlier than originally planned.

The Airport Modernization Program (AMP) is a $242 million construction program managed by Delta in partnership with the MAC to deliver a unified and modern design across six of the terminal’s seven concourses and approximately 75 Delta gate hold rooms.

The extensive renovation project began in the fall of 2023. Phase one work in Concourse F is substantially completed. Concourse D renovations will be completed later this fall. Phase two renovations in Concourse C will continue through the summer of 2025.

The final phase of the Airport Modernization Program now focuses on floor, ceiling, and interior gate area improvements in Concourses A, B, G (Gates G1-6, G14, G15 and adjacent corridor areas), and the skybridge connecting concourses C and G.

“Close to a year into the program, many passengers can now see some of the improvements walking to or from the first completed gate areas — they’re bright and modern, delivering an exceptional airport experience for passengers,” said Bridget Rief, vice president of airport development and planning at the MAC, which owns and operates MSP. “New digital gate signs are now visible walking down the concourse, which allows passengers to see flight and destination information more quickly.”

“As we move into the third and final phase of the Airport Modernization Program, we are thrilled to offer our customers a seamless and consistent experience as they travel through MSP,” said Jeannine Ashworth, vice president of Delta Operations at MSP. “We are grateful for our partnership with the MAC to bring our shared vision to life.”

There is minimal impact to airport operations during the construction, with the majority of the work occurring during overnight hours. The complete list of airport renovations in the program includes:

  • Technology upgrades that include dynamic flight information screens along concourse walkways at every gate
  • Full refresh of 75 Delta gate areas
  • New gate seating with power outlets
  • Brighter, more modern and sustainable LED lighting in concourse walkways and gate areas
  • Installation of more accessible and durable terrazzo flooring in concourses C, D and G; and new carpet in concourses A, B and F
  • New wall finishes, including quarter-height granite in public corridors and tile in Delta gate areas
  • Metal panel ceiling system in most concourse walkways
  • New structural column covers
  • New carpeting in gate areas to mirror experiences at other Delta hub airports
  • Updated gate information display screens
  • Refreshed Delta branding across all gate areas

The Airport Modernization Program will be completed in 2025. The MAC is investing $182.5 million, or approximately 75% of the total cost of the program. Delta is contributing $60 million for the improvements.
