MSP Airport Fire Chief

Robert “Bob” Koenig, a fire service veteran with more than 30 years of experience, was named chief of the Airport Fire Department (AFD) in June 2021 following a nationwide search.

Koenig joined the Metropolitan Airports Commission in 1997 as a firefighter and was later promoted to firefighter driver and captain before being named a shift commander in May 2013. He also served with the Minnesota Air National Guard in a variety of firefighting capacities for 21 years.

He was named chief of the Guard’s 133rd department in 2003 and was deployed multiple times, including to the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina and to Iraq in 2008 where he served as a U.S. Air Force fire chief overseeing a 50-person unit. He retired from the Guard in 2010.

Koenig has a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Wisconsin–Stout and an associate’s degree in fire science from The Community College of the Air Force.
