Intent
Intent
The MAC has established objectives specific to these standards to help support all aspects of the design. They should be used by project teams to help drive successful projects to completion.
Public Space Design
Public spaces at the airport should reflect the high quality of life in Minnesota. In addition, any improvements to the airport should uphold the airports reputation as one of the safest, most convenient, and efficiently run airports in the country.
Planning and Coordination
The rapid growth of MSP and fast pace of construction creates a need for careful planning and coordination by MAC airport development and design teams. With more people involved in multiple projects on fast-track schedules, the need to clearly articulate and communicate MSP design intentions is paramount. Creating clear documentation, phasing documents and designs.
Visual and Aesthetic Continuity
Because MSP has a variety of architectural spaces that have been built over time, continuity is particularly important to making the airport a united space. Consistency in finishes that are durable and simple should leave room to allow for public art, advertising, accent colors and materials to provide architectural interest. In general, an aesthetic of warm base palette of materials, natural daylight, and accent colors, represents a starting point for design direction as can be seen in the current Terminals.
Comprehensive Design Standards
This set of guidelines and standards will help maintain a consistent standard of design throughout MSP. These standards include but aren’t limited to sustainable design, accessible spaces for all, durability and maintainability.
Purpose
The purpose of these documents is to clearly outline the MAC's expectations for both design and construction. To improve clarity and navigation, the content is organized into the following sections:

- Procedures
- Sustainability
- Tenant Design Criteria
- Deliverables
- Terminals (MSP Terminal 1 and Terminal 2)
- MSP Outbuildings
- Relievers
- Technical Criteria
- Construction Coordination Requirements
- Guide Specifications
- Standard Details
- Forms
- Influencing Project References
These Design and Construction Standards provide procedures and system requirements that Design Consultants and Tenants must integrate into their construction documents. They detail the technical specifications for product selection, building system integration, and compatibility with existing airport systems.
The technical criteria outlined in these documents are not meant to be copied verbatim into project manuals, unless explicitly stated. Design Consultants and Tenants are expected to interpret and incorporate the intent of these requirements into their specific project specifications. Guide Specifications are intended to be used as written and modified only as needed to support the individual project requirements.
These standards also provide an overview of the key processes that Design Consultants and Tenants must follow when preparing construction documents. Coordination with designated MAC personnel is required.
It is important to note that these standards do not override any applicable Federal or State codes. The minimum requirements described within these documents are in addition to, not in place of, those applicable codes. We have intentionally avoided duplicating code requirements within this document. Where specific recommendations are not provided, Design Consultants are expected to use their professional judgment.
The Design and Construction Standards in effect at the 45% submittal will remain the authoritative guide throughout the construction process. Exceptions are permitted, but only with clear communication, outlining the financial impacts, and detailed justifications for the proposed changes as determined by Airport Development Project Initiation.
